The Empire of Austria Its Rise and Present Power John S C Abbott 9781374967564 Books
An interesting book, written in the 1860s I think. It briefly covers the various, and many, Hapsburg sovereigns from their empire's formation in the 11th century through to the author's present day. I found the book very readable, and a different perspective on history, in that I got a sense of the nature of the people, their character, and their strengths and weaknesses as individuals. The book also discusses the Reformation, and relations between Catholics and Protestants, and later Calvinists, and how those relationships motivated behaviour.I've not found a ton of books on Austria-Hungary or the Hapsburgs, so I was happy to find this book.

The Empire of Austria Its Rise and Present Power John S C Abbott 9781374967564 Books Reviews
This book contains a huge amount of information. The author is staunchly pro-Protestant but seems to save his greatest ire for the inability of Lutheran and Calvinists to cooperate.
Fascinating to read a book written before the 1848 revolution.
Tough reading the first few chapters but it became extremely entertaining. The author did a great job tactfully reminding the reader how "peasants" suffered during all the selfish snobbish, childish, wasteful intrigues and wars. Eventually I wanted to see all dynastic plans fail. Plan to read again soon.
Since I am coming from Slovenia which was for a long time a Hapsburg territory I wanted to learn more about this powerful dynasty. The book gives an overview about several generations of rulers, one learns much about European history, not only Austrian empire but also other power houses of the continent.
I kind of liked the archaic English and the way how Abbot implements his moral views on the acts of the kings and princes. Often I had to use dictionary on some less common English words - good for vocabulary, but most of them are not in use in modern English.
There are some mistakes in the book with dates which could easily be corrected. Also some of the names of places and people are written in a form tat do not exist nowadays. This makes it harder to understand and one has to search for current (or more common versions of) names. For example Breslau (as described in Book) is nowadays a city called Wroclaw in Poland.
All in all it is a good read and not too difficult to follow the red line - despite several Maximillians, Leopolds, Charleses, Fredericks and others...
Hard to follow - organization is not crisp, but it is a somewhat a complicated series of events.
Informative, easy read and style not to "stuffy".
I felt the was very easy to understand, yet comprehensive . I had to take some breaks because after awhile some of the reigns of the different emperors kind of ran together but that happens in these kind of history books.it is always very interesting to me to read about what other countries were doing during the same periods in history it helps me piece together more about the entire world. I enjoyed this book, but you need to like reading about history . I also like to read books like this because it helps me focus my attention on people and events go interest to me.
It’s more than a little dated and it took a bit to get through but I did gain a new perspective.
